How to Stop Hair Fall - Tips, Ways & Products to Control Hair fall at Home
March 30, 2021
Hair fall is one of the most common hair concerns. Almost everyone goes through it at least once in their lifetime. But before we address the elephant in the room and find out how to prevent hair fall, let's first understand how the hair growth cycle works. Our hair goes through 3 phases -
Anagen - During this phase, our hair grows actively and it can last for years.
Catagen - During the phase, the hair stops growing and separates from the follicle (structure beneath the skin that holds the hair). This phase lasts for about 10 days.
Telogen - During this phase, the hair goes into rest mode for a couple of months and then finally falls out. Normally, only 6 - 8 % of our hair goes into this phase.
The next Anagen phase resumes when new hair starts sprouting out from the same follicle and the rest of the cycle continues.
Is Having Hair Fall Normal?
Yes! Losing 50 to 100 strands a day is normal as new hair tends to replace the lost ones. This can also be termed as hair shedding.
However, this doesn’t always happen. If the number of strands you lose every day increases considerably and new hair is not growing, then it can be a sign of hair fall.
How To Identify Hair Loss?
While it is not possible to count the number of strands you lose daily, here are a few things you can keep a check on -
1. Keep a track of how much hair you usually lose during a head bath, combing or even when you normally run your fingers through the strands.
2. Notice if your hairline is gradually receding or you are experiencing hair fall significantly at a particular spot.
3. Observe if the density of hair is gradually reducing or if there are any thinning patches of hair.
If you happen to notice losing hair more than usual, we recommend consulting a doctor to understand its cause and find out how to stop hair fall immediately.
What Are The Causes Of Hair Loss?
Hair loss reasons are plenty but here are some of them -
1. Hereditary -
One of the most common causes of hair loss is hereditary male or female pattern baldness.
2. Hormonal changes -
Both men and women can face hair loss as their hormonal composition changes. For women, it is usually followed after childbirth, during menopause or due to hormonal imbalances. For men, it depends on the follicles’ response to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
3. Nutritional deficiencies -
Deficiency of nutrients like Zinc and Iron can also trigger hair loss. However there are other nutrients and vitamins too that can cause hair loss, these are - vitamin D, B - 12, C, A, copper, selenium and biotin.
4. Medical conditions -
Autoimmune diseases, diabetes, liver disease, thyroid, skin conditions like alopecia areata, scalp infections, psoriasis and eczema etc can also very well contribute to abnormal hair shedding or loss.
5. Medications -
Certain medicines like for thyroid, oral contraceptives among others may induce hair loss as a side effect.
6. Stress -
Stress, anxiety, improper sleep patterns caused due to physical and emotional shocks may trigger hair loss as well.
7. Tight, pulled back hairstyles -
Yes, pulled back hairstyles put too much pressure on the follicles and make them weak when done repeatedly leading to hair breakage.
How To Control Hair Fall?
To fix and reverse hair loss, it is crucial to identify the root cause for the same. We recommend consulting a doctor if you happen to notice abnormal hair shedding, sparse patches or hair thinning and follow a proper hair fall treatment plan.
Apart from medication, one can also make the following lifestyle changes for hair fall control.
1. Clean diet
Eat healthy, balanced meals and monitor your diet regularly. Add foods that are rich in Zinc, Iron, Protein and essential vitamins to your diet.
2. Regular exercise
Indulging in consistent physical activities helps reduce stress and balance sleep cycles. We also recommend meditation and yoga to help combat stress and anxiety.
3. Avoid pulling hair or tying them in tight hairstyles
We recommend not wearing hairstyles that put too much pressure on the follicles as it may lead to weak follicles, receding hairline and hair thinning. Instead opt for hairstyles like loose braids, buns and ponytails.
4. Do not wash your hair excessively
The natural oils that your scalp produces are good for you. Washing hair too often will wash away the oils and can reduce the ability of the scalp to regulate itself.
Also, avoid making a bun while you are washing your hair. Do not comb or brush on wet hair.
5. Avoid heat on hair
Yes, heat isn’t good for your hair. Choose air drying or blow drys and heatless curls methods over curling tongs. If you are into styling your hair a lot, try minimising the use of heat to whatever extent possible.
6. Stress
Stress, anxiety, improper sleep patterns caused due to physical and emotional shocks may trigger hair loss as well.
7. Follow your hair care routine religiously
It is very important to choose the right products for your hair and religiously follow your hair care routine. This ensures your hair can overcome the damage due to environmental aggressors, heat and styling products.
Not just that, it also helps reduce stress in the muscles of your scalp, boost blood circulation and puts you in a happy mood.
