Everything You Need to Know About Skin Purging

Have you ever had a breakout when trying a new skincare product? The answer is probably yes. It happens to all of us! But why? There are two explanations - the first - and most common - one is that perhaps the product or some ingredient in it is not best suited for your skin. The second is that your skin could be purging. But what is skin purging? Read on to find out!

What Is Skin Purging?
Quite simply, skin purging is when your skin breaks out when you're trying a new product because your skin is trying to adjust to it. Think of purging as your skin throwing a bit of a temper tantrum. It's 'just a phase' and after a while, everything settles down and returns to normal!
Products such as retinoids, hydroxy acids (such as AHAs and BHAs), among others (called active ingredients) are the kinds that cause skin purging. Switching from a regular skincare routine to a natural and organic skincare routine can also purge your skin.
These actives and products increase the cell turnover rate and that leads to increased pimple formation. So small pimples become bigger ones and clogged pores turn into pimples. Why does this happen? Well, it’s because the expedited cell renewal is bringing these hidden comedones (or bumps) to the surface. But you don't need to worry too much because purge pimples tend to disappear faster too.
Skin purging is only a temporary state so if you are experiencing it, you should continue to use the product. If after a few weeks, your skin is still reacting to the product then its time to consult a dermatologist.

How Do You Know Whether Your Skin is Purging or Breaking Out?
All this brings up a really big question - how can you tell whether your skin is purging or breaking out? The reactions are pretty much the same after all! Well, it's all about carefully observing your skin.
First off, we know active ingredients cause your skin to purge. So if you're using a chemical exfoliant, such as a beta-hydroxy acid or BHA, and experience any reactions, it's probably your skin purging. With organic skincare products, because of the concentration of the ingredients, you might also experience purging.

You know a product is bad for you when you have any redness or inflammation when you didn't have any skin issues before using the product. That's your skin breaking out and not purging.
Purge pimples also can look a little different than breakouts and appear in the same area as your existing blemishes. While purging appears on the skin mostly in the form of blackheads or small skin-colored bumps, acne breakouts, on the other hand, could be in the form of blackheads, cysts, or pimples.

How Long Should You Wait?
Whether your skin is purging or breaking out, its not a phase anyone likes and the last thing you want to do is damage your skin barrier. So how long should you wait before you decide to throw away your new skincare product? Well, it should take approximately one skin cycle or 28 days ( 4 weeks) for your skin to adjust to the new product. You may argue that everyone's skin is different and you're quite right but this is the average time it would take. Keep in mind, the product causing the purging is increasing the cell renewal process so 4-6 weeks is a good enough time.
If it's been more than 6 weeks and you're still in that purging phase, it's time to see a dermatologist, or maybe you need to alter the dosage and frequency of your application.
