Busting Some Facial Oil Myths!

There's a lot of misleading information about facial oils these days and it can often become really difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. So, let's debunk some myths on facial oils and set the record straight!

People with oily skin cannot use facial oils

This is probably the biggest misconception about facial oils. The truth is that certain facial oils are actually great for oily skin! Oils such as marula oil are really lightweight and even control sebum production. They're also great for strengthening the skin barrier which is the outermost protective layer of the skin!

Facial oils clog your pores

This is also not true at all. While some oils can be comedogenic, oils such as jojoba oil are really lightweight and are quite similar to the natural oils our skin produces. As a result, these facial oils absorb rather quickly into the skin without clogging your pores.

People with acne-prone skin should not use facial oils

So we know that our skin secrets oil or sebum through sebaceous glands. Well, acne is a result of hair follicles that become clogged with this oil and dead skin cells. Many people believe that if we put facial oils on top, it'll make the acne worse and that's totally incorrect. Oils can actually help balance sebum production and some (such as tea tree oil) are even anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. These can help control acne too!

If you use a good moisturiser, you don't need a facial oil

This is also not true at all. Facial oils are generally applied as the last step of your skincare routine. They help seal in the products applied before and strengthen the skin barrier. Adding a facial oil to your beauty routine may just help lock-in all that goodness you applied earlier. What's even better is that oils are rich in nutrients and antioxidants and provide nourishment of their own!

Facial oils are a new trend

That's not true at all! Facial oil treatments date back to centuries ago. In fact, ancient Egyptians were obsessed with facial oils and incorporated oils such as moringa, sesame and castor oils to tackle ageing. The early Japanese geishas even used camelia oil as a first cleanse! So this isn't anything new and it's certainly not a frivolous fad! Facial oils have gracefully withstood the test of time, and when used properly, do wonders for the skin!
