Tea Tree Oil Benefits & Uses

Tea Tree Oil for Skin: Notable Advantages and Methods of Application

Tea tree oil is a widely recognized essential oil celebrated for its therapeutic qualities and is extensively utilized in aromatherapy as well as in skincare products aimed at promoting healthier skin and hair. This light yellow oil is derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree, which is indigenous to Queensland, Australia, through a steam distillation process and possesses a camphor-like aroma.

The chemical makeup of tea tree essential oil includes 1,8-cineole, terpinen-4-ol, alpha-terpineol, and gamma-terpinene. Numerous studies indicate that tea tree essential oil demonstrates a broad range of antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial effects. It has long been a beloved choice for its healing properties throughout history.

In addition to its germ-fighting capabilities, steam-distilled tea tree essential oil also boasts potent antioxidant properties. It is known to assist with various skin conditions such as acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, chronic gingivitis, and it also speeds up the wound healing process.

What are the skin benefits of tea tree oil?

Here’s how tea tree oil can enhance skin health:

  1. Acne Treatment - Thanks to its terpinen-4-ol content, tea tree oil inhibits the growth of bacteria that cause acne. It aids in the healing of active breakouts and alleviates associated inflammation.
  2. Blemish Reduction - Its antioxidant properties help to diminish blemishes and promote a more uniform skin tone.
  3. Minimizes Open Pores - Tea tree oil is recognized for its natural astringent qualities, which significantly reduce the visibility of open pores.
  4. Unclogs Pores - Known for its deep-cleansing abilities, tea tree essential oil helps to clear clogged pores, resulting in smoother and clearer skin.
  5. Soothes Dry, Itchy Skin and Scalp - Its anti-inflammatory properties provide relief for dry skin and calm the itchiness or irritation it may cause.
  6. Hydrates and Refreshes Skin - Rose water is excellent for instantly revitalizing your skin and enhancing the absorption of moisturizer.
  7. Anti-Aging Benefits - Due to its rich antioxidant content, rose water helps to slow down the skin's aging process.
  8. Dandruff Relief - Tea tree essential oil cleanses the scalp and removes dead skin cells, providing relief from dandruff while keeping the scalp healthy and moisturized.

How to Utilize Tea Tree Oil?

There is an extensive list of applications for tea tree oil on the face; however, as an essential oil, it is highly concentrated and should not be applied directly to the skin or scalp without dilution. It is advisable to mix the essential oil with an appropriate carrier oil within its recommended dermal limits to make it suitable for topical use. At JC, we recommend that essential oil(s) should constitute 1% or less of the total mixture. For example, if you are using 100 ml of carrier oil, the essential oil(s) should NOT exceed 1 ml of the entire formulation. If you are combining multiple essential oils, their total should NOT surpass 1 ml.

Here’s how you can incorporate tea tree essential oil into your skincare and haircare routines:

  • For Acne-Prone Skin - Dilute it with carrier oils such as cold-pressed hemp seed oil (ideal for oily skin) or cold-pressed argan oil (suitable for dry skin) and apply it as the final step in your skincare routine both day (before sunscreen) and night.
  • For Itchy and Dandruff-Prone Scalp - Mix it with cold-pressed neem carrier oil and use it for a head massage once or twice a week, followed by a wash.

If you do not have specific skin or hair concerns but still wish to enjoy the numerous benefits of tea tree oil, you can dilute it with any carrier oil of your choice within the dermal limits for topical application.

How to Select the Right Tea Tree Oil?

As a consumer, you may encounter a vast array of tea tree essential oils available in the market, and we understand that it can be daunting to choose the right one. Here’s a checklist to follow before making a purchase:

  1. Extraction Method - Ensure that the tea tree oil is steam distilled, as this method is known to preserve its nutrient profile after extraction.
  2. Certification - Look for labels that indicate Certified Organic or Certified Natural.
  3. Credibility of Certification - If it is certified, verify that it comes from a reputable organization.
  4. Ingredients List - If the label lists only ‘Melaleuca alternifolia,’ then it is an undiluted pure oil.
  5. Country of Origin - Check that the tea tree oil is sourced from Australia, its native region.
