All About Vitamin C and Skincare
November 26, 2021Before we delve into the role of Vitamin C in skincare, let us explain what Vitamin C is and where it comes from.
What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid, is a water-soluble vitamin found naturally in fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that is required to combat oxidative stress, regenerate other antioxidants including Vitamin E, and also for the biosynthesis of collagen. Collagen is a structural protein found in our body’s various connecting tissues and it is responsible for skin’s strength and elasticity. As we age, collagen tends to deplete and our skin starts to lose its firmness. Vitamin C is known to stimulate collagen synthesis and improve skin elasticity.
Since humans are unable to synthesise Vitamin C endogenously, it becomes imperative for them to get it through diet, supplements, and topical application.
Sources of Vitamin C

Naturally Occurring Vitamin C
Fruits and vegetables, that can be consumed raw, are the best sources of Vitamin C to include in your diet. These include Kakadu Plum, Red and Green Peppers, Oranges, Grapefruits, Broccoli, Strawberries, Tomatoes, Potatoes, Spinach, Green Peas, and many, many more. Taking a balanced diet with five varied servings of vitamin C rich fruits and vegetables daily can provide just the right amount of this vital vitamin required by your body. -
Vitamin C Derivatives
Natural Vitamin C is a notorious compound when extracted from its source. It is highly unstable and breaks down rapidly when exposed to air rendering it ineffective for use. That is why Vitamin C derivatives (synthetic variants) are widely used in both dietary supplements and skincare industries. Some of these include Ascorbic Acid, L-Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbate, Calcium Ascorbate, Ascorbyl Glucoside, etc.
Vitamin C: The most sought-after skincare ingredient
A potent antioxidant, Vitamin C plays a crucial role in skincare. Amongst the myriad of benefits this vitamin has to offer, some of them are -
- It actively supports collagen and elastin production, both of which are responsible for skin elasticity, firmness, and youthfulness.
- It also inhibits melanin synthesis thereby controlling the appearance of pigmentation, spots, and uneven skin.
- Its strong antioxidant properties help eliminate oxidative stress and reverse UV rays induced damage.
- It also promotes well-ageing by improving the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
While natural Vitamin C can be easily incorporated into the diet through fresh fruits and vegetables, its use gets rather complicated in skincare due to its highly unstable nature. Until recently, there has not been a method known to stabilise natural Vitamin C. That is why its derivatives are being largely used in skincare products.
However, with the world’s first revolutionary Cellular Extraction™️, it is now possible to extract natural Vitamin C from the plant matter in its most active and stable form - for long periods of time. And unlike its derivatives which extend the benefit of a single compound, Cellular Extraction™️ brings an entourage of phytonutrients to the table mimicking the bio-matrix of the plant into the serum.
Why Kakadu Plum Cellular Extract?
Native to Australia, Kakadu Plum is the world’s richest source of Vitamin C - almost 50 times more than oranges. That is why it became our obvious and only choice for the first of Juicy Actives™️ - Vitamin C Brightening Serum. The Cellular Extract of Kakadu Plum not only offers the benefits of Natural Vitamin C (in its most active form) but also of phenolic compounds such as Ellagic Acid and Gallic Acid, Amino Acids, and other antioxidants like Quercetin and Vitamin E.
Kakadu Plum Cellular Extract helps us capture an entourage of hydrophilic nutrients (as bioavailable in the plant itself) in a hydrating medium to actively promote healthy, youthful, and brighter skin.
