7 Benefits Of Triphala For Hair

According to Ayurvedic texts, triphala is one of the most beneficial herbs for us. The word 'triphala' is made of "tri" meaning "three" and "phala" meaning "fruits". Triphala is a mixture of Amalaki fruit (Emblica Officinalis), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia Belerica) and Haritaki fruit (Terminalia Chebula) in a 1:1:1 ratio. Triphala oil is made by infusing these three herbs in equal quantities in a base oil. Let us learn about some triphala benefits for hair care.

Benefits Of Triphala Powder For Hair Care

  • Improves Hair Health
  • Triphala is mentioned as a tridoshic rasayana in Ayurveda, meaning that it has a balancing effect on Vata, Pitta and Kapha, the three doshas or imbalances in one’s body. Triphala balances all 3 doshas in our body making it useful as an internal cleansing agent. By balancing our internal health, triphala helps in promoting our hair and scalp health externally.

  • Delays Greying
  • According to a study, triphala powder was prescribed as a hair wash powder to a patient with premature grey hair in her early 20s. The patient was also prescribed other ayurvedic herbs for oral consumption. Triphala, a balancing ingredient, helped the patient reduce her aggravated pitta or heat, which is the major reason for premature grey hair.

  • Maintains Black Hair
  • Triphala contains tannins that make your hair appear darker. It also contains copper which helps boost blood circulation and melanin production in your hair.

  • Reduces Hair Loss
  • Triphala was used in a case study that successfully treated Alopecia Areata. The patient was prescribed triphala for washing their hair, along with other herbs.

  • Provides Antioxidants
  • The presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, saponin glycosides and phenolic compounds can be attributed to the rich antioxidant profile of triphala. These antioxidants fight free radical damage and protect your hair against environmental stressors.

  • Reduces Inflammation
  • Triphala helps in reducing scalp inflammation caused by unsuitable hair care products or environmental changes.

  • Controls Dandruff
  • Triphala has antimicrobial properties that reduce itching and flakes on your scalp.
