Soothe and Nourish your Dry scalp

Do you experience a constant itch on your scalp? The reason might not be just dandruff. Yes, you read that right. A dry scalp can be irritating and might cause discomfort. It is a condition wherein the sebaceous glands on the scalp do not produce enough sebum to keep it moisturized. With regular cleansing, the dry scalp condition may aggravate unless steps are taken to moisturize the scalp and nourish it.

Causes of Dry Scalp

There can be various causes for dry scalp involving internal and external reasons. The first step towards improving the dry scalp is understanding the cause and finding solutions.

Internal factors that may cause a dry scalp include

  • Genetics
You may have a dry scalp genetically. Just like we have a certain eye colour or hair colour, genes can also determine our natural skin type or scalp type.
  • Hormones
Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy or menopause can also cause dry scalp conditions. The condition may or may not be temporary.
  • Age
Age can be a considerable factor for having a dry scalp. The older we get, the dryer the scalp becomes.
  • Conditions such as Atopic Dermatitis or Psoriasis
Dry and scaly conditions on the scalp are often observed in patients with atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis.[1]

External factors that may cause a dry, itchy scalp are

  • Weather conditions
Sometimes dry, humid or cold weather conditions can also make the scalp go dry. Usually, the scalp is more prone to dryness in winters. In winters, regularly washing hair may not be possible for everyone which might lead to other scalp conditions.
  • Excessive Cleansing
Sometimes, the excessive use of shampoo, might dry out and irritate the scalp resulting in a flaky scalp.
  • Wrong choice of hair care products
Using hair care products not meant for your hair and scalp type might cause the scalp to dry out. Shampoos with sulphates usually dry out the scalp. Since the scalp already produces less sebum, it may just itch or become flaky.

Dry Scalp can develop many associated conditions such as itching, dandruff. Since the dry scalp has less natural moisture or sebum, its protective layer can get compromised easily. This can make the scalp more susceptible to micro-inflammations. These inflammations can irritate the scalp. It also leads to itching, redness and dandruff.

Associated Dry Scalp Conditions

  • Dandruff
Many people confuse dry scalp with dandruff and keep on using anti-dandruff shampoos only to find an increase in the itchy scalp. The body sheds dead skin cells as a natural process. Maintaining good scalp hygiene makes this process of getting rid of the dead skin cells easy.  Whereas poor hygiene and negligence may lead to flaky scalp and dandruff. [2]
  • Itching
Dandruff is often accompanied by itching. The scalp skin has less sensitive sensory nerves which might result in experiencing a worsening of scalp conditions easily.[3]

The dry scalp doesn't need frequent cleansing nor does it require strong treatments unless you have severe dandruff or any other condition. The best way to tackle dry scalp is to maintain a fine balance with cleansing and replenishment. Striking a perfect balance while not going overboard with any hair care step is the trick to combat dry itchy scalp.

Dry Scalp Remedy

  1. Following a regular cleansing cycle
Cleansing helps to reduce the build-up of dead skin cells or dirt and grime. You can wash your hair every fourth day or as per your requirement. The period of each wash will need a little trial and error as everyone's hair and lifestyle are different. Follow your hair wash cycle as per your requirement and lifestyle. Along with regular cleansing, special attention is to be paid to the shampoo as well.
  2. Choose a Mild Shampoo
Using a mild shampoo will cleanse the scalp and nourish the hair. Opting for sulphate free shampoos is recommended for dry scalp. Shampoos containing sulphates are best avoided as they strip the sebum making the scalp drier. If you are using shampoo to combat dandruff, make sure it isn't too strong. If possible you can use a mild shampoo and dandruff shampoo alternatively, to combat dandruff while avoiding the drying out of the scalp further.
  3. Deep conditioning hair masks
You could use moisture-rich, pre-shampoo hair masks for nourishing the scalp. They help in calming and soothing the scalp from dryness. Organic hair masks are often formulated with plant-based butters, carrier oils and essential oils. They not only help to revitalize the scalp but also help retain moisture. They can also assist in reducing the associated problems such as dandruff or itching.
  4. Using the hair care products in a right way
Correctly using the products is imperative. Follow the rules: shampoo your scalp and condition your hair lengths.
  5. Carrier oil for scalp massage
The fatty acids rich organic cold pressed carrier oils can help replenish the moisture of the scalp. They can also help soothe and calm down the irritation of the dry scalp. You can massage your scalp with a few drops of carrier oils as per your requirement. Carrier oils like Hempseed Oil, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil are good for dry scalp. For itchy scalp you can add a few drops of cold pressed neem oil to these oils. You may apply the oil overnight or one hour before shampoo.
  6. Watch the water temperature
Using hot water will make the scalp drier while washing with any shampoo. Hot water also leaves the hair dehydrated. Always use lukewarm water to wash your scalp and hair.
  7. Be gentle with the hair
While brushing the hair or while using your shampoo, be gentle with your hair. Aggressively handling your hair is a big no! It might irritate the scalp and even cause hair fall.
  8. Rinse the hair properly
Rinsing the hair thoroughly well helps to ensure no products are left behind, especially the wash off conditioners.
  9. Avoid using heat styling or heavy styling products
If possible avoid heat styling your hair. Heat styling might make the scalp dry and heavy styling products can cause a build-up in the long run.
