Best Rose Water Sourced From Bulgaria
May 06, 2021Why do we obtain Rose Water from Bulgaria?
We frequently receive inquiries about why JC chooses to source Steam Distilled Rose Water from Bulgaria, even though it can be produced here in India. The answer lies in the quality!
While roses do flourish in India, the finest varieties are found in Bulgaria. Known as “Gullestan” (the land of roses), Bulgaria provides the ideal climatic and soil conditions necessary to cultivate the highest quality roses, specifically the Damask Rose and White Rose!
Due to the unique Bulgarian climate and soil, the Damask Rose from this region is renowned for containing over 280 components, making it exceptionally sought after for its fragrance, durability, and complexity.
The Bulgarian Climate
The rose valley in Bulgaria experiences a distinctive climate characterized by long, hot summers and brief, mild winters, which creates the perfect humid and warm environment for cultivating top-quality roses.
Significant rainfall during May and June is also vital, with an average monthly precipitation of 80 to 100 mm per square meter. These advantageous climatic conditions extend the flowering season, reduce oil evaporation, and ultimately improve both the yield and quality of the oil.
The mountains encircling the valley shield the crops from harsh winds, while the two river streams supply essential water for the roses' growth.
The Bulgarian Soil
The exquisite roses thrive in airy, sandy, and clay-free soil, which is precisely what the Bulgarian rose valley provides. The primary soil type is Cinnamon Forest soil, blended with sand and rubble, along with various alluvial soil types and subtypes formed by river mineral deposits.
The Bulgarian Farmers
Roses have been a vital aspect of Bulgarian culture and hold a cherished place in the hearts of local farmers for generations. The significance of roses is so profound that they even celebrate festivals dedicated to this singular flower.
Bulgarian farmers have been cultivating roses for centuries, passing down their knowledge and skills through the ages. Their unmatched expertise and invaluable experience in growing and harvesting the world’s finest roses are unparalleled
Harvesting of Roses
The period from mid-May to early June signifies the harvesting time for farmers in Bulgaria. The roses are gathered in the early hours of the morning, just before dawn, while the morning dew still clings to the petals of these valuable flowers. They are placed in baskets made from willow branches, as these materials do not absorb moisture. Why is this important? Because roses harvested before sunrise are known to contain 50% more rose oil concentrate.
Following this, the roses undergo steam distillation to produce Rose Water and Rose Oil. On average, it takes 1 kg of rose petals to yield 1 kg of rose water, while an astonishing 50,000 rose petals are necessary to create just 1 mg of pure rose essential oil. This is why this treasured oil is often referred to as ‘Liquid Gold’!
