SPF, PA++++ & UVA-PF Explained: How to Actually Read a Sunscreen Label

SPF 30. SPF 50. PA+++. PA++++. UVA-PF. Sunscreen labels can look like a string of numbers and plus signs, but each one is trying to tell you something different. Once you know what those measurements mean, comparing sunscreens becomes much easier.

What does SPF mean?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It primarily relates to protection against UVB-induced erythema, or sunburn, under standardised testing conditions. It is not a complete measurement of all UV protection.

What does PA++++ mean?

PA is a system used to communicate UVA protection. More plus signs indicate a higher category within that system. UVA is important because it contributes to tanning and photoageing and penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB.

What is UVA-PF?

UVA-PF refers to a measurement of UVA protection. Different regulatory systems and regions may communicate UVA performance in different ways, so the exact label can vary. The useful takeaway is that UVA protection needs to be considered separately from SPF.

SPF and PA are not interchangeable

A high SPF does not automatically tell you the full story about UVA protection. Conversely, a strong UVA rating does not tell you the SPF. A good sunscreen routine needs protection across the relevant UV spectrum.

How to shop smarter

Look for an appropriate SPF, strong UVA protection, suitable texture and enough product for adequate application. If you spend time outdoors, sweat heavily or swim, follow the product's reapplication instructions.

The cheat sheet

SPF is mainly a UVB indicator. PA is a UVA protection category. UVA-PF is a measured UVA protection value. Broad-spectrum protection indicates coverage across UVA and UVB ranges. Once you understand those distinctions, sunscreen shopping becomes much less mysterious.

FAQs

Q: Is PA++++ better than PA+++?
A: Within the PA system, PA++++ represents a higher UVA protection category than PA+++.

Q: Does SPF 50 mean twice the protection of SPF 25?
A: No. SPF values do not translate into a simple 2x relationship. They are based on standardised testing of erythema protection.

Q: Does SPF protect against UVA?
A: SPF primarily communicates UVB-related protection. Look for separate UVA information as well.

Q: Do I still need sunscreen on cloudy days?
A: UV exposure can occur through clouds, so sunscreen is still relevant when you are exposed to daylight outdoors.
