Sunscreens are of three types:

Mineral sunscreen - contains physical sunscreen filters

Chemical sunscreen - contains chemical sunscreen filters

Hybrid sunscreen - contains a combination of both mineral and chemical sunscreen filters

As the name suggests, Mineral sunscreens use minerals as sun-protecting ingredients. They are often referred to as physical sunscreens because they form a physical barrier on the skin for sun protection. The minerals that provide protection in mineral sunscreens are Zinc oxide, Titanium Oxide. They block the Sun's UV rays when applied to the sun-exposed body parts by scattering and reflecting them and can be sometimes called sunblocks. Mineral sunscreens often leave a little white cast which settles in sometime after applying to the skin or by blending in the skin.

Benefits of Mineral Sunscreens

Provides Broad Spectrum Protection

Mineral sunscreens provide protection against UVA and UVB rays both. This makes it easier and useful for a daily, long time and intense sun exposure. They are also beneficial for long term use.

Non irritating

Minerals essentially are non irritating and suitable for all skin types including the sensitive skin type. This helps in avoiding the potential risk of allergy or skin irritation if a particular skin type has.

Provides immediate protection

Mineral Sunscreens are believed to provide immediate protection as soon as applied. One doesn't need to wait for the mineral sunscreen to offer protection as they form a physical barrier on the skin and reflect UV rays immediately upon application.

Lasts longer in direct UV light

Minerals used in mineral sunscreen are generally photostable and do not break down easily in the sun. They offer greater and longer sun protection.

Environment Friendly and Safe

Mineral Sunscreens are neither harmful to humans nor broad-spectrum an underwater life and coral reefs.
