Organic beauty has taken the beauty industry by storm. It is a revolution of sorts with more and more brands coming up with organic alternatives to traditional beauty and skincare products available. Whether you love to try new things or you want to make a conscious shift from toxin-laden products, organic beauty has to have crossed your mind at some point.
Despite the increased interest, people still shy away from completely turning organic. That’s because there’s just so much information and misinformation. But we’re here to help. So let’s get to it!
Why Shift to Organic Beauty?
First and foremost, it is important to truly understand why you’d want to change. Skincare and haircare are so personal and some people just enjoy sticking to the products they know work for them. So let’s go through some reasons why organic beauty is a great alternative!
Free from nasties and toxins
There’s been a fair amount of controversy regarding ingredients such as parabens, phthalates, sulphates and many others. This is because consumers are more informed than ever and are also more aware.
Juicy Chemistry products, created from truly organic ingredients and produce, contain no preservatives or any controversial ingredients. So, you don’t have to worry about any toxins or synthetic ingredients that might cause harm to your skin in the long run!
By shifting to organic beauty, made from natural resources and without any synthetic additives, you’re promoting an environmentally friendly approach to beauty. The beauty industry has great notoriety for producing pollutants and microplastics that cause great harm to the environment. Also, most organic beauty brands are created with the ethos of being sustainable and environmentally friendly and often have recyclable packaging.
No synthetic fragrance
Fragrances in beauty products are used to mask the somewhat unpleasant smell of the product. While the product may feel very fancy, your skin can react to it. With organic beauty products, no synthetic fragrances are used. If the product does have a fragrance to it, it is the natural fragrance of ingredients such as essential oils.
Taking the Plunge
So you’ve decided you want to give organic beauty a try. Where do you start? Well, here are some pointers for you:-
- Firstly, start slowly. This applied to both skincare and haircare. Truly organic products are highly concentrated and contain essential oils that are highly potent among other ingredients. If you have sensitive skin and/or scalp, you want to be careful. Always do a patch test with organic products. Also, sometimes you may experience skin purging. If this doesn’t die down in a month or so, then discontinue the product immediately!
- When purchasing an organic product, be sure to always check the ingredients list. It is sadly quite common for brands to use terms such as ‘organic’ and ‘natural’ as a marketing gimmick to entice consumers. For more information on this, you can refer to *this post*. Even if a product or brand is certified, there is still a lot of grey for these brands to operate in and, as a consumer, you need to know what’s what!
There are a couple of things you need to keep in mind with organic haircare and here they are:-
Often with organic shampoos, you’ll find they lather less. This is because they don’t contain foaming ingredients such as surfactants (SLS, SLES among others) that give that rich foamy lather. These agents are known to dry out the scalp and hair and cause itchiness. Since organic shampoos, don’t have these controversial ingredients, you won’t find a very rich lather. In no way does this mean that the product is not working!
Another point to note with organic haircare in particular is that, in the initial stages, you might find that you hair is dry and limp. This generally happens because traditional commercial shampoos leave a layer of petrochemicals on hair strands. As a result, when strands rub together, they appear smoother and shinier because of the reduced friction between the strands. With organic shampoos, you’ll probably feel the need to use a leave-in conditioner.
- Your hair also might feel oilier in the beginning but soon enough, your scalp adjusts to the change and it’ll balance itself. If you’ve oiled your hair, in the case of organic shampoos, it is a good idea to wash your hair twice. Since they don’t contain any harsh ingredients, your hair and scalp will not be stripped off their natural oils if you use organic shampoos.
In the first 7-8 washes from an organic shampoo, your hair and scalp may act out. You may experience some hair fall and scalp itchiness but don’t worry! This happens because your hair is returning to its natural state and the scalp is re-adjusting and re-calibrating itself!
