Benefits of Triphala for Hair

Triphala as a herb is touted as super beneficial for hair according to Ayurveda. The word Triphala is made up of a combination of "tri" means "three" and "phala" means "fruits". Triphala is nothing but a mixture of Amalaki fruit (Emblica Officinalis), Bibhitaki fruit (Terminalia Belerica) and Haritaki fruit (Terminalia Chebula) in a 1:1:1 ratio. Triphala oil is made by infusing the three herbs in equal quantities in a base oil. Today we will check the benefits of Triphala for hair.

Triphala oil for hair uses and benefits

Triphala is mentioned as a tridoshic Rasayana in Ayurveda meaning it has rejuvenating effects on Vata, Pitta and Kapha, the three basic body types according to Ayurveda. Triphala, a combination of all three, is balanced, making it useful as an internal cleansing, detoxifying formula.

There is no research as such for Triphala oil, however, Triphala powder along with other herbs has been studied in a few cases related to hair. Let us check them

In one study Triphala powder was prescribed as a hair wash powder to a patient suffering from grey hair in her early 20s. The patient was also prescribed some other ayurvedic herbs as a part of internal consumption. Triphala, a balancing ingredient, helps to reduce the aggravated pitta which is the major reason for premature grey hair.

In addition to the above study, all the ingredients used in Triphala contain tannins.  Thus Triphala oil contains a considerable amount of tannins that can make the hair appear dark and vibrant. Amla also contains minerals such as copper which help boost blood circulation and the formation of melanin, a dark pigment responsible for black hair. For the hair to look visibly healthier, consistent use of Triphala oil is recommended.

Triphala was found to be a part of a case successfully treated with ayurvedic management for Alopecia Areata. The patient was prescribed Triphala for hair wash along with other herbs. Triphala oil may be useful to treat hair loss with long term use.

Using Triphala powder for hair wash powder may not be feasible for everyone. Triphala powder is often consumed to improve hair health which needs a consultation with a doctor. But, using Triphala oil will be feasible and convenient as it suits all body types according to Ayurveda.
