After spending a quarter of my life believing that longer a product serves you, the better it is, I learned that I was horribly mistaken. But, before I proceed further, I want you to stop everything and answer this – “do we really require 6X shelf life for products that can potentially serve us only X duration?”
No, absolutely not! There’s indeed no rational reason for that and to be brutally honest, we all have fallen prey to “the more, the merrier” marketing stunts. Now, you may ask me “how does that matter anyway, it’s a good thing right?”. Well, that’s exactly the purpose of this blog to clear the air around products with longer shelf life or rather products with preservatives.
To be on the same page, let’s understand preservatives first. Upon googling, you’ll find that preservative is a substance or chemical that prevents decomposition of the product by microbial growth or by undesirable chemical changes for longer periods of time. In a layman’s language, it doesn’t let microorganisms such as bacteria, mould and yeast to contaminate your products and keep them safe for you to use for a considerable longer duration. It’s safe to say that use of preservatives prolongs the shelf life of a product. Sounds good, eh? Well, we need to explore more before we establish that.
Preservatives do extend the longevity of the products and help keep them free from bacteria but they themselves are not the best for your health. They have proven to be promoting various skin diseases as well as are known to be carcinogenic (potential to cause cancer). Still sounds good, no right?
Following are some of the highly toxic commonly used preservatives that you will find in your everyday products –
Parabens – these are associated with increased risk for breast cancer due to their estrogen – mimicking properties. They are widely found in makeup, body washes, deodorants, shampoos and face washes.
Synthetic colours – these are derived from petroleum or coal tar sources and are suspected to be carcinogenic, skin irritant and linked to ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children. If a product labels reads D&C or FD&C then it definitely includes synthetic colours.
Fragrance – It has been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on reproductive system. These are found in perfumes, colognes, moisturizers, hair sprays, shampoo, conditioners and so on.
Phthalates – known to be endocrine disrupters, phthalates have been linked with increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive birth defects in both males and females. These are found in deodorants, perfumes, hair sprays and moisturizers.
Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)/ Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES) – found in most of the regular use products, these are known to be skin, lung and eye irritant. They can potentially damage kidney and respiratory system along with forming carcinogenic elements by interacting with other chemicals. These are found in shampoo, body washes, mascara and acne treatments.
Surely, the list doesn’t end here, there many more ingredients that you must stay away from and that’s why I urge you all to be an informed consumer and read product labels for your and your loved ones well – being.
To understand this better, the need for preservation arises due to water content or any ingredient that adds moisture to the product giving birth to bacteria, mould and fungus overtime and when there is access to oxygen for oil ingredients to go rancid making the product unusable. But what if I tell you that almost all such everyday products can still be produced without preservatives and yet serve you a reasonable duration of time? Yes, that’s doable and that’s exactly what Juicy Chemistry has been doing for years now.
All Juicy Chemistry products are 100% preservatives free with no moisture content and abundance of anti – oxidants completing eliminating the requirement for chemical preservatives. These products depend on the natural preservation qualities of organic ingredients and offer you a reasonable 6 – 8 months product shelf life. That’s not all, all these ingredients are ECOCERT certified under COSMOS standards and hence, are safe to use. Juicy chemistry also ensures to educate its consumers by sharing all the information regarding the product via detailed labels including how to use and store the product to avoid contamination of any sorts.
It’s about time to make a deliberate shift from toxic to clean, it’s about time to lead a healthy life inside out. 😊
